Zillow is a real estate marketplace app made by Zillow Group. It falls into the property search and home-listing category, and people mostly use it to browse homes for sale or rent, check estimated values, and get a feel for a neighborhood before deciding whether it's worth a visit. I downloaded it on a whim because a friend kept sending me listing links, and at that point I figured it was easier to just have the app on my phone instead of opening a browser every time. It's free to download, and the install itself took no time at all. When I launched it for the first time, it asked for my location, which makes sense since the whole point is showing homes near you. I skipped creating an account at first, and the app didn't force me into it. That was a relief. It does show ads in places, and there are in-app purchases for things like boosted listings, but as a regular browser I never felt pushed to pay.
Once I got past the location prompt, the map view loaded with little price pins scattered around my area. Tapping a pin pulls up photos, square footage, price history, and an estimated monthly payment. The filters are where things get interesting. You can sort by price, bedrooms, bathrooms, home type, and even keywords like "pool" or "updated kitchen." I spent a good twenty minutes just dragging the price slider around to see what popped up. The interface is clean enough that I didn't need a tutorial, but a few things took me a second to find, like the saved searches and the draw-your-own-boundary tool. One small tip: if you're serious about a specific neighborhood, set up an alert. Otherwise you'll be refreshing the same area over and over. The photos load fast, and most listings include a 3D tour or at least a floor plan, which helps when you're trying to rule places out without driving across town.
After using it for a few weeks, I've come to see Zillow as a solid starting point rather than a final answer. It's great for getting a rough sense of what your budget buys in a given area, and the saved homes feature makes it easy to keep track of places you like. But the estimates, especially the Zestimate, can be off, sometimes by a lot, and some listings are already under contract by the time you call. If you're just curious about the market, it's fun and low-pressure. If you're actively buying, you'll still want a real agent and probably a second app like Redfin to cross-check. I've kept it installed because it's handy for casual browsing, but I don't treat it as gospel.
features
- 🔍 The map-based search is the core of the experience, letting you pan around a neighborhood and see prices instantly without typing anything into a search bar.
- 🔍 Compared with Redfin, Zillow tends to have more listings overall, partly because it includes forsalebyowner and rental listings that Redfin sometimes filters out.
- 🔍 The 3D tours and floor plans are genuinely useful for pre-screening homes, especially when you're looking in a city you don't live in yet.
- 🔍 Saved searches with instant notifications are the feature I end up using most, since new listings in hot areas disappear within days.
pros
- ✅ The sheer volume of listings makes Zillow hard to beat as a first stop when you're just starting to look.
- ✅ Price history and tax records are shown right on the listing page, which saves you from digging through county websites.
- ✅ Compared with Realtor.com, Zillow's interface feels less cluttered and the map loads faster on older phones.
- ✅ It works well as a rental search tool too, which isn't always true for apps that focus mainly on sales.
cons
- ❌ The Zestimate can be misleading, and I've seen it differ from actual sale prices by tens of thousands of dollars.
- ❌ Some listings stay up after they're pending or sold, which wastes time if you're checking daily.
- ❌ Compared with Redfin, Zillow shows more ads and sponsored listings, which can push real results further down.
- ❌ Agent contact forms sometimes lead to a flood of calls from multiple agents, not just the listing agent.
