HotPads Rent Apartments is a rental listing app from HotPads, a company owned by Zillow Group. It falls into the real estate and apartment-hunting category, and people mainly use it to browse homes for rent, check prices, and contact landlords or property managers. Someone might download it after getting tired of scrolling through messy classifieds or hitting dead-end listings on other sites. The app is free to download from Google Play and the App Store, and it has been installed millions of times, which says a lot about how many renters rely on it. You can start browsing right away without creating an account, though signing up lets you save searches and get alerts. There are no in-app purchases that I noticed, and ads are pretty minimal, mostly just promoted listings mixed into results. When you first launch it, the screen is clean and map-focused, which feels less overwhelming than some competitor apps that throw a dozen banners at you before you even see a listing.
Once you're in, the app drops you straight onto a map dotted with rental pins. You can drag around, zoom in on a neighborhood, and tap a pin to see photos, rent, bed and bath counts, and pet policies. Filters are easy to find at the top, so narrowing by price, number of bedrooms, or move-in date takes just a few taps. I liked that you can draw a custom boundary on the map to search only the streets you care about, which is a small thing but saves a lot of time. Contacting a landlord usually means sending a message through the app or requesting a tour, and responses vary depending on the listing. One tip: turn on notifications for saved searches, because good units in busy markets disappear fast. The main hiccup is that some older listings stay up even after they're rented, so you learn to double-check the date posted before getting excited.
After using it for a few weeks, I think HotPads works best for renters who want a straightforward map-based search without a lot of fluff. It's less visually polished than Apartments.com and doesn't have the roommate-finding social layer of Roomster, but it pulls listings from a wide network thanks to the Zillow connection. People who prefer browsing on a laptop might find the mobile app a bit limiting for serious research, and anyone looking for short-term or vacation rentals will be better off elsewhere. For a standard apartment hunt, though, it earns its place on your phone. I kept it installed because the saved search alerts actually surfaced new units before I saw them on other sites. If you're just casually curious about prices in your area, you might not need it for long, but for an active search, it's worth keeping around.
features
- 🔍 The map-first interface lets you draw custom search zones, which is more precise than typing in a neighborhood name and hoping the boundaries make sense.
- 🔍 Listings sync with Zillow's rental network, so you often see units here that haven't shown up on smaller niche sites yet.
- 🔍 Saved searches with push alerts are genuinely useful in fast-moving markets, and they're free unlike some competing apps that lock alerts behind a paywall.
- 🔍 Compared with Zillow Rentals, HotPads feels slightly more renter-focused and less cluttered with agent ads, though the underlying data overlaps a lot.
pros
- 😊 The biggest strength is coverage. Between HotPads' own listings and the Zillow Group network, you're tapping into a massive pool of rentals that smaller apps simply can't match.
- 😊 No account is required to browse, which lowers the barrier compared with Apartments.com, where you're nudged to register before seeing full details.
- 😊 The custom map boundary tool stands out against Rent.com and Trulia, giving you finer control over exactly where you want to live.
- 😊 It's free and ad-light, so you're not fighting through pop-ups the way you might on some Craigslist-adjacent rental apps.
cons
- 😕 Stale listings are a real annoyance. I ran into several units that were already rented, and the same problem shows up on Zillow Rentals, so it seems like a network-wide issue rather than something unique to HotPads.
- 😕 The app lacks the richer neighborhood data and walkability scores that Apartments.com provides, so you may need a second app to judge an area properly.
- 😕 Messaging landlords through the app can feel like shouting into the void. Response rates are inconsistent, and there's no built-in way to track which inquiries went cold.
- 😕 Compared with Roomster, it offers nothing for people looking for roommates, which limits its appeal if you're not searching for a whole unit.
