Apartments.com Rental Search is a mobile app built for people hunting for a place to live in the United States. It falls into the real estate and rental listing category, and the Android version comes from CoStar's Apartments.com team, which is a well-known name in property data. The app is available on Google Play for Android and on the App Store for iPhone. You can download and install it for free. When you launch it, the first thing you notice is how clean the search screen looks, with a big search bar and photos of listings right away. There is no need to register just to browse, which is a relief. You can save searches later if you want. The app does show ads, and there are in-app purchases, though the main browsing experience stays free. The install count is not displayed in the info I have, so I cannot give an exact number there.
After opening it, the onboarding is minimal. You type in a city, ZIP code, or neighborhood, and the app pulls up a map view with pins and a list below. You can filter by price, beds, baths, pet policy, and amenities like in-unit laundry or parking. Tapping a listing opens a gallery of photos, a floor plan sometimes, and a contact button. The steps feel natural: search, filter, favorite, then reach out. One small tip is to turn on notifications for new listings in a saved search, because good places in busy markets vanish fast. The map can feel a bit cluttered when you zoom out too far, and some listings repeat across different sources, which gets confusing. Still, scrolling through photos and comparing prices side by side is smooth enough that you forget you are on a phone.
After using it for a couple of weeks, I think it works best for renters who already know which neighborhoods they want and just need a steady stream of options. People who prefer talking to a local agent face to face might not need it, and anyone outside the U.S. will find it useless. What makes it stand out from Zillow Rentals or Realtor.com is the sheer volume of professionally managed apartment communities, not just individual condos. I kept it installed because the saved search alerts actually matched what I was looking for, but if I were only casually browsing, I would probably uninstall it after a month. It is a solid tool, not a magic one.
features
- 🔍 The search filters are deep without being overwhelming. You can stack pet-friendly, washer-dryer, and max rent all at once, which Zillow sometimes buries under multiple screens.
- 🔍 Map-based browsing feels faster here than on HotPads. Pins load quickly, and tapping one shows a photo preview before you commit to opening the full listing.
- 🔍 The standout feature is the saved search alert system. It pushes new listings that match your exact filters, and in my experience the alerts arrived before I saw the same units on Trulia.
- 🔍 Listing quality is consistent because CoStar verifies many of the property managers, so you get fewer dead links and fake photos than on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.
pros
- 👍 Compared with Zillow Rentals, the interface here feels less cluttered with mortgage ads and agent spam, so browsing stays focused on rentals.
- 👍 The database leans heavily toward large apartment complexes, which means more accurate availability and pricing than Realtor.com in big metro areas.
- 👍 Saved searches sync across devices if you create a free account, something HotPads does but with less reliable push notifications.
- 👍 Contacting a property is simple. The app pre-fills an inquiry message, and I usually got a reply within a day, faster than on ApartmentsList.
cons
- 👎 The ads are persistent. Banner ads sit at the bottom of the screen, and sometimes a full-screen ad appears between listings, which Zillow Rentals does not do as aggressively.
- 👎 Some listings are stale. I found apartments that had been rented months ago still showing as available, a problem Trulia handles better with its update timestamps.
- 👎 The in-app purchase for premium filters feels unnecessary. You can get similar filtering on HotPads for free without the paywall prompts.
- 👎 Coverage in small towns is thin. In rural areas, Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace often has more individual listings than this app does.
