So, I stumbled upon this app called Hair Color & Hairstyle Try On by Toon Tech Ltd. It's basically a virtual makeover tool, sitting right there in the photo editing and beauty category. You download it from the app stores mostly if you're the kind of person who gets bored with your current look but isn't ready to commit to an actual salon visit. I mean, we've all been there, right? Staring at a dye box in the drugstore, wondering if that “Chocolate Cherry” will look good. This app lets you test those crazy ideas. After installing it – and I noticed it had a decent number of downloads, nothing record-breaking, but solid – you get the usual free access with some in-app purchases and ads popping up. The very first launch was a bit of a mixed bag. The welcome screen throws a few options at you, and it feels a little cluttered. You can tell right away it's not the most polished UI you'll ever see, but the core idea is what pulls you in.
Once you actually get into using it, the real experience kicks in. You either snap a fresh selfie or upload one from your gallery, and honestly, the app prefers a clear, front-facing shot with your hair pulled back. That's a small tip I learned after a couple of wonky attempts. The interface then highlights your hair, and you scroll through a ton of shades. Some are natural – think brunettes and blondes – others are full-on fantasy colors like pastel pink or electric blue. What's actually pretty impressive is the real-time mapping. You move your head in the preview, and the color kind of follows. It's not perfect, especially with flyaway hairs, but for a quick “what if,” it works. There are also hairstyle overlays, wigs basically, that sit on your head. They look like cardboard cutouts sometimes, which is a bit immersion-breaking. A common usage flow is probably trying on five or six colors, taking a screenshot, and then sending it to your friends for a poll. That's the natural lifecycle of this app.
After playing around with it for a week, I have some solid thoughts. Who actually needs this app? Honestly, indecisive people or anyone planning a drastic change. If you're a hairstylist, you might even use it to show clients options. But if you want photorealistic quality, you'll be let down. It doesn't hold a candle to something like FaceApp in terms of sheer polish, but FaceApp isn't built just for hair try-ons. This app feels more niche. What stands out is the sheer volume of color swatches and styles, much more than most generic photo editors offer. But the ads? They pop up at the worst moments, right when you're about to compare two shades. I can see someone keeping it installed only for those moments of boredom or pre-salon anxiety. Others will uninstall it after one use because the novelty wears off when you realize the hairstyles don't exactly blend with your face shape. It's a fun tool, not a professional one.
features
- 💇♀️ Vast Color Library: One thing really sets this apart from something like YouCam Makeup. The hair color palette goes beyond typical beauty app restrictions. You get 50+ shades, including ombre and highlights. In YouCam, you often get a solid block of color, but here, you can pick roots and tips separately. It's not always accurate, but the variety is undeniable.
- 🎨 Dynamic Lighting Preview: Compared to Style My Hair by L'Oreal, which uses a studio-light simulation, this app attempts a dynamic preview. As you rotate your face in real-time, the shade shifts with the lighting. It's a bit clunky on older phones, but when it works, it gives you a realistic feel of how “Rose Gold” looks in sunlight versus indoors.
- 🖼️ Side-by-Side Comparison: After you save your favorites, you can enter a split-screen mode. This is its standout feature. Most apps only show you one altered image at a time. Here, you can have your original hair, the new color, and a punk style all in one frame. It makes decision-making way easier for the user.
pros
- ⭐ Huge Catalog Without Paywall: Unlike apps like Hair Color Changer which lock 90% of colors behind a premium subscription, this Toon Tech app offers about 40% of its shades for free. You only pay for the super rare fantasy colors or specific pro tools. That's a big win for casual users.
- ⭐ No Account Needed for Core Features: Many beauty apps force you to register with an email or Facebook just to take a photo. Here, you can use the main try-on features without any sign-up. The privacy angle is a clear advantage over ModiFace or similar competitors.
- ⭐ Quick Export Options: The share button sends a high-res image to Instagram or WhatsApp directly without watermarking the free versions. That feels generous compared to FaceApp which slaps a logo on everything unless you pay.
cons
- 😩 Wonky Hairline Detection: This is its biggest flaw. If you have curly hair, baby hairs, or any texture, the AI just blobs it. Compared to YouCam Makeup's edge detection, this app looks like a rough cut-and-paste job. It never gets the natural hairline right.
- 😩 Static Hairstyle Overlays: The “hairstyle” feature is a joke against something like Perfect365. The overlays don't contour to your head shape. They just sit on top like a hat. It breaks the illusion completely, making this app only good for color, not actual cuts.
- 😩 Ad Interruption Frequency: I counted three ads in less than five minutes of browsing colors. Other apps like Style My Hair manage to put ads only before a save or share action. Here, the ad placement feels aggressive and kills the flow.
