So I have been messing around with Fruitmates: Block Jam Puzzle for a few weeks now, and honestly, it is one of those casual puzzle games that just sticks with you. It falls squarely into the block puzzle genre, but with this cute fruit character twist that gives it some personality. The game is developed by Yellow Bird Games, and it is built for mobile first. You can grab it on Android through Google Play, and it is also on the App Store for iOS users. It is a pure mobile game, so no Steam or Switch version, which makes sense for a quick pick-up-and-play puzzler. I am not totally sure when it first launched, but it feels like it has been around for a bit and has picked up a solid following. Install numbers are in the millions on Google Play, which says a lot for a smaller studio title. The best part is that the download is free, and you can install it without spending a dime. There are in game purchases and some ads, but nothing too aggressive. The purchases are mostly for boosters or extra moves, and they usually run a couple of bucks up to maybe ten or twenty if you buy a bigger bundle. You can easily play without paying, though.

Playing Fruitmates is pretty straightforward. You get a board full of colorful blocks and fruit faces, and your job is to drag and drop pieces to clear lines and hit the level goals. The controls are simple taps and swipes, so anyone can jump in. What I love most is the pacing. Levels are short enough for a coffee break but still make you think. The best part for me is the combo system. When you chain clears together and the fruit characters react, it feels rewarding. I also like that there is no timer pressure in most modes, so you can plan your moves. My favorite thing is probably just the satisfying pop when a big cluster clears. It is simple, but it works.

Compared to other block puzzle games like Block Blast or Woodoku, Fruitmates feels a little more lively. Those games are great, but they can feel a bit dry after a while. Fruitmates adds character and a bit of charm without overcomplicating things. If you want a puzzle game that is easy to pick up and does not stress you out, this is a good one. I would recommend it over some of the bigger names just because it feels less pushy with ads and the levels are more varied. It is not revolutionary, but it is fun, and that is what matters.

features

  • Fruit character charm 🍎 The fruit faces and little reactions make clearing blocks feel less mechanical and more playful than plain block puzzles.
  • Short, snackable levels ⏱️ Most stages take a minute or two, so it fits nicely into small breaks without demanding a long session.
  • Combo feedback 🎉 Chaining clears gives satisfying visual and audio cues, which keeps me coming back for one more run.

pros

  • Easy to learn, hard to put down 👍 The drag-and-drop controls are instantly clear, which makes it friendlier than some puzzle apps that bury you in tutorials.
  • Less ad pressure than Block Blast 📵 I can play several rounds before an ad shows up, and that alone makes it more enjoyable for me.
  • Good variety in goals 🎯 It mixes clear-the-line objectives with other small twists, so it does not feel like the same board over and over like some Woodoku clones.

cons

  • Difficulty spikes later on 😕 Some later levels jump in difficulty fast, and I have burned through boosters quicker than I wanted to.
  • Booster reliance 💸 It can start to feel like you need paid help on tougher stages, which is a bit annoying compared to more generous puzzle games.
  • Not deep enough for long sessions 😐 It is great in short bursts, but after an hour it starts to feel repetitive, especially if you are used to bigger puzzle games with more modes.
